Kevin Dean Trio
September 23, 2017: The first concert of the 6th JazzNhouse season was a wonderful affair, with many new guests and old friends enjoying the set selection of Montreal trumpeter Kevin Dean. Dean, who is credited with putting in place the phenomenal Jazz Studies program at McGill University's Schulich School, wowed the audience with his mastery of phrasing and consistency, the uniqueness of the arrangements. and a good dose of humour. Starting off with a tribute to the hosts, "Blues for Gord and Bonnie" (a neatly improvised take on the blues tune Oh So Basal by Barry Harris), Dean then switched up to his versions of cowboy-era songs. These included trumpet renditions of Gene Autry movie ballads such as Moon Of Manjana by Autry and Johnny Marvin and Bing Crosby's Empty Saddles by Billy Hill, Along with the captivating guitar solos by veteran guitarist Greg Clayton and tantalizing bass solos by Alec Walkington, the trio presented a tight and entertaining evening of jazz.
